Out Of Step

To all you sexist guys out there causing misery in the scene who say that girls can't do hardcore, this band should shut you up once and for all. The singer, Candace Kucsulain, has an amazing voice, and the band's overall sound, moshy metal-core, just drips power. The band's secret lies in this power, and it would be foolish just to give all the credit to the vocalist, as the other elements, fast, urgent drumming; raw, harsh guitars; and a fat bass, all work together in making Walls Of Jericho, in my opinion, one of the most exciting hardcore bands around today. Yet another factor which adds to the already impressive make-up of the record is the deeply sensitive and poetic lyrics. Stand-out songs are Playing Soldier Again, an anti-war anthem; Home Is Where The Heart Is, a surging, angry song; and Angel, a beautiful, sad slow tune in which Ms Kucsulain gets the chance to show us that, behind the scream, there also lurks a wonderful singing voice. From first to last, this is a wonderful record, and I just look forward to the day when this band make their way over to little Belgium, and play some kickass live shows. Amazing.

Spank

Totally brutal, bone-ripping hardcore. Bouncing right back after their pulverizing full-length release, 'A Day and a Thousand Years' on Genet, Walls of Jericho wasted no time hitting us with another grinding set of tunes. Lead singer Candace Kucsulain’s vocals call up some wicked vengeance that is akin to Slayer, except Walls of Jericho don’t need Satan and can play this shit fast. "Playing Soldier Again" and "Full of Discloure" have Kucsulain unleashing her rage while the rest of the band pull from her aggression with a very heavy-handed punch. Thrash or hardcore, whatever you want to call it, this Garden City, Michigan band is the real deal, kicking backpacking asses as they go.

Into Obscurity

Most bands have difficulty capturing the intensity of their live show on a studio recorded CD. I saw Walls of Jericho open for In Flames and Earth Crisis and was impressed, so I picked up the CD. When I got home and popped it in the CD player, I feltl like I was at the show again. They managed to have the same in-your-face, loud sound that they did when I saw them the night before. This CD is jam-packed with 11 songs (stretching across 22 minutes) of pure metallic hardcore in the vein of Earthmover (Walls of Jericho have an ex-member of that band) with a female vocalist that can outscream more than half the guys I've heard scream in my day. My only complaint is that the CD is so damn short so at the end it leaves you wishing there was much more material to listen to from this band. I'm also now kicking myself in the ass for not grabbing a tshirt of theirs at the show when I had the chance.

With more and more bands trying their feet in the "noisecore" waters, there are only a handful of bands that separate themselves from the pack. Walls of Jericho is one of the bands that is racing off to the top of the pile. Taking the best from hardcore and speed metal, Walls of Jericho's "The Bound Feed the Gagged" is one of the sickest hardcore albums to enter the circuit in the past year. Take Converge and add a female lead singer and you have an edge and sound that differs from many of the other bands out there. Just about every song on this CD is at break neck speed. The melody, for the most part, is thrown out the window for thrash guitar picking accompanied by muted craziness, pinch harmonics, whammy dives and drumming that will make Slayer fans think twice about how fast they are. The thing that really sets Walls of Jericho apart from a lot of hardcore bands is that they have a female lead singer. Some people may be skeptical of this when they first learn of it. But take it from me, when I first put Walls of Jericho in my CD player, I had no idea that a girl was fronting this band. That's just how sick Candace's vocal range is. She growls and screams with the best of the boys and would give Aaron from Converge a serious run for his money. She is just mean. In some situations where a woman fronts a "heavier" band (Manhole and Tarrie B.) it takes away from the music because the attention centers on her, however, in Walls of Jericho nothing could be further from the truth. This band is all about crushing your skull and songs like "Inevitable Repercussions" and "Unwanted Resistance" with their speed metal/hardcore guitar work and double bass drumming and cymbal crashes do just that. However, the band does give you a brief look at what they can do without distortion and screams. "Angel" gives you a glance of the lone pieces of melody on the album. Mike and Chris pick up the acoustics and let Candace reflect in a tone that reminds me of "Like A Prayer" era Madonna. Very different from the chaos that precedes it on the rest of the CD, but it's a nice break and it really works well. If there is one CD that you should instantly go pick up and never take out of your CD player, it has to be Walls of Jericho's "The Bound Feed the Gagged." Walls of Jericho's insane style of hardcore will catapult them to the front of the noisecore movement and with any luck, they'll be way up there in the world of hardcore as well. The "Sparky Scale" opens up and takes a huge helpin' of "The Bound Feed the Gagged" in for a 10 out of 10. There isn't much in the world of music that is perfection, but this is damn near close.

Eventide

Candace Kucsulain has one of the most visceral, raw voices in hardcore; listening to this, I can feel the urge to wipe spit off of my face, and with music like this, that's not always a bad thing. Musically, it's mosh-friendly metalcore that wisely decides to give the vocals room to do their own thing. Occasionally, the band shifts gears to play steamrolling, stripped-down fast hardcore, which makes for an interesting change of pace. Another nice changeup is the band's use of more melodic parts, including the all-acoustic "Angel", which sounds like a completely different band. It's a good album, though Walls of Jericho are at their best when they break from the formulas of their genre and go in an unexpected direction.

Value Of Strength

If my house was on fire right now and I had the chance to only get one CD with me, I would probably catch this one, because this CD contains everything what I like to hear in hardcore. That’s why I am listening to this one every day for at least one time since the day I recieved it for reviewing. These 11 two minute songs incorporate every element of metal and hardcore that you can think of. Walls Of Jericho has found the perfect balance between anger, emotion, aggression, speed, sing-alongs, melody and even some youth crew parts. Also responsible (maybe she’s main responsible…) for the fact that I go crazy for this band is their female vocalist Candace, which most of the time screams her heart out in a way that I have never heard doing a girl before. On the beautiful acoustic song "Angel" her singing really comes close to the title of this song. Candace and her companions took over my CD player and everyday I’m hoping that they won’t cancel their upcoming European tour this summer. Everything is everything and everything is Walls Of Jericho.

Louder Than Words

Wow. This CD is really crazy. Featuring female vocalist Candace, Walls of Jericho really know how to explore every crevice of hardcore. Walls of Jericho have a mostly metal hardcore sound like other bands on Trustkill, but what really brings this CD to life is all the different forms of hardcore this group can play, and play well at that. Songs like "Inevitable Repercussions" show that they can play pure metal hardcore well. The song "Angel" is just kind of a weird acoustic song, I would say it's the weakest song on the CD. Songs like "Changing Times" really have a big youth crew sing along feel to them. Anyway, all I have to say is Walls Of Jericho really impressed me, they are one of the few groups with female vocalists that I can actually enjoy. This one is a keeper for sure.

Slayer meets Erathmover with female vocals. I fucking love it. I vote this most likely to take you by surprise. It's like this band came out of nowhere. You couldn't open your eyes at Krazyfest 2000 without seeing their tee shirts or windbreakers on someone. Very fast metalcore fronted by the toughest girl in the world. The album is simply amazing, but pales in comparison to their live show. I won't elaborate, just see for yourself. Trustkill has done it again. Support a great band; buy this album. It would make a great stocking stuffer.

Heckler

I've been buying tons of hardcore lately, hoping to be inspired. So much is out there but nothing has made me take notice. After reading a few things and looking for a while, I finally picked up the Walls of Jericho. Oh man, it's all here. The passionate screaming, the rad heartfelt lyrics, and a fantastic mix of pure pounding metal and a few ballad-like gems. I guess I should mention that a female delivers the vocals. I'm torn because it's really not important. The vocals are so perfect, and so strong that it doesn't matter the sex of the person delivering them, and shouldn't be an "oh my gosh a girl?!?" issue. I mention it because it is inspiring to hear a female stand up in the male dominated world of hardcore and make it a complete non-issue. Get this and get excited about hardcore once more.

Oh my! Trustkill sure knows how to pick 'em! Musically this CD is speed metal heaven! With some awesome breakdwon parts that will make anyone bang their head til their necks get sore. The vocals are brutal as hell, mixing perfectly with the musical onslaught. I could do without the singing parts towards the end, but in all this is a damn good addition to any metal craving individual's collection.

I Stand Alone

This is the best metal influenced hardcore record to come out in the past year. Period. End of discussion. If you want a quality band that has brutal music, powerful lyrics and overwhelming intensity, this is the one for you. This band is a breath of life in an often stagnant hardcore scene. Hopefully people will recognize the progression they represent and give them the support they deserve.

Endwell

The first time I heard a woman fronted this metallic-hardcore band; I became interested to investigate further. Luckily, the next time I was in Syracuse they were playing. Needless to say, I was certainly impressed with how tight of a unit they were and how amazing, lead singer, Candace's voice was, regardless of her sex. These Michigan rockers continue to knock my socks off on this, their first full-length effort. Heavy and fast at the same time, which seems to be an oddity in this age of old school or new school and the silly separation of the two. Socially conscious and personal lyrical content also blend to form a cool mixture and layered attack. All in all, WOJ show that modern day hardcore can combine different aspects to produce a highly emotional and intense experience.

Full Contact

Walls of Jericho is quickly becoming popular due to the great combination of metal influenced hardcore and emotion-filled lyrics; also, they are the only hardcore band around with a female singer. Female vocalists have always been a ararity in hardcore or even metal. They either have squeaky Go-Go's type vocals or badly faked rough vocals that make them sound like they're trying to be guys. Vocalist Candace Kucsculain vocals are basic straight up hardcore screaming just a little bit higher than what you're used to, but something that you don't even notice after a couple of listens. I'd compare them to Poison The Well in terms of musical and even vocal styles.

Kill Me Zine

These guys put out an EP last year before their full-length, and I have to say it pales in comparison to their newer stuff. Slayer riffs, female grrrrowling vocals, and personal lyrics that have to do with everything from support to society to alcoholic parents. I usually don't like most female vocals, but this is good because not only can she scream her lungs out like there's no tomorrow, she can also sing really beautifully, which is proven on one awesome acoustic track. The Gauntlet

This Michigan quintet pull no punches on their 11 track CD. Highlighted by extreme guitar work a la Slayer ("Home Is Where The Heart Is", "Misanthropy") and gritty, brutal female vocals, Walls of Jericho takes conventional hardcore and turns it on its ear ("Why Father"). Incorporating all styles of hardcore into two minute bites of aggression ("Family Values"), WOJ show that they're not to be taken lightly and don't mess around. If you're looking for a new kind of hardcore fix, look no further.

Walls of Jericho is not only a sharp name but a powerful band as well! Crunching rhythms that remind of early Earth Crisis material with a vocalist that just rips! I originally thought this was a high pitched guy yelling and screaming into oblivion, but I later found out this was the voice of Ms. Candace. I usually don't like female vocalists doing screams, but this lady will change everyone's mind. The lyrics deal a lot with the inequalities that exist in today's society. Very moving!

Superhero

Fast paced and moshy metallic hardcore that possesses a spirit and credibility that so many bands in this tired genre lack, that's what you'll get if you try on Michigan's Walls Of Jericho for size. Lyrically, Walls of Jericho cover political issues from an intensely open personal perspective, tackling things with sing-a-long worthy gang vocals, spoken and screamed emotive cries and desperate gasps atop plenty of stops and starts, Slayeriffic riffing and franting fretwork over skankin' pit-worthy beats. Walls of Jericho's power is undeniable, hitting you in the face with all of the subtlety of a large sledgehammer and demanding that you take this band and their convictions seriously. The Bound Feed The Gagged is a more than worthy addition to the Trustkill catalog.

No, there's no typo in the album title. Yes, the girl at the forefront of the band picture is the singer. Yes, what you're hearing is aggressive noisecore, and, yes, that's why your ears are ringing after you turned it off. No, the album's not long enough, even though there are eleven songs. Yes.

Metal Maniacs

Crueler than a crazed cell block prison riot. More abrasive than a belt sander over broken, bloodcaked skin. Able to leap mundane modern metalcore in a single measly bound. This, my new music-craving caped crusaders, is Walls Of Jericho, and "The Bound Feed The Gagged" sees the savage, Michigan-based fivesome abound with relentlessly thrilling defiance. Say hello to the most fulfilling twenty-two minutes ever pounded into a round, shinny piece of plastic. Uh huh, twenty-two minutes. Certainly then, there's not about to be much breathing room for the eccentric dynamics that a few of Walls Of Jericho's more progressive-absorbed scene peers are partial to these days. But let those guys have their pillars of frequency experimentation and instrumental pyrotechnics because these terrors straight outta the Great Lake State excel at a different ballgame. One filled with eleven abrupt scrimmages revelling in ballistic shitfit whiplash one moment and staggering sledgehammer chug holocaust the next. One that plays both those thrusts off each other so effectively it induces adrenaline rush after adrenaline rush of unrestrained upper body slamdamage and chopping air guitar acrobatic stomp. One that re-invigorates traditional HxC gung ho-ness on record to the point where it feels like you're actually surrounded by flailing headstocks, dogpile vocal yell-alongs and kung fu kickspazz even alone in your living room. And one, it should be stressed, that takes full advantage of microphone mephista Candace Kucsulain's passion and presence without exploiting her position. Staking forceful claim for herself right alongside Amy from Nausea and Karyn Crisis, Kucsulain is similarly far removed from being a trump card or novelty factor for Walls Of Jericho. Lets face it, when something like the blistering percussive menace of "Home Is Where The Heart Is" or "Unwanted Resistance"'s Arise-era Sepultura-meets-Turmoil strike is going for the throat the only thing that will really be of concern is how much Candace's vital, caustic attack vigorously matches and volleys with that of her bandmates. On the other hand, both "Misanthropy" and the fittingly-titled "Angel" reveal something entirely different about the vocalist that's just as amazing. Maybe even more startling than the crushing impact Walls Of Jericho will make the very first time they come screaming from the stereo.

Start From Skratch

Right from I sat back listening intensely thinking why do this guy's vocals sound so different? I picked up the CD jacket, flipped through the pages and saw a female with a microphone in her hand. WHAT? Looked closer, "vocals: Candace Kucsulain". Holy shit! I'll be the first to admit that I've never been a big fan of hardcore bands with female vocals, that high-pitched sound usually just ends up pissing me off. However, Candace's vocals are NOTHING like I'm used to hearing and something that with the rest of the band's magic can thoroughly put you to shame. The music, to put it bluntly, is something that you just can't fuck with, packed with tight ORIGINAL metal/hardcore parts and the necessary chugga-chugga moments to bring things back together. When the song titled "Why Father" came on with lyrics "Must overcome and impale you with the epitomes of your actions/we loved so much/now I won't let myself hate you less/now you're dead/you haven't suffered enough - are you proud?", I wrote to Trustkill immediately to get an interview (look for it in #6). This is the type of band I eagerly await when stuff for review starts to pile in. Order and buy this now and fall in love with one of the greatest metal/hardcore bands around.

Step aside boys: Walls Of Jericho’s Candace Kucsulain is about to rock your world. The Bound Feed The Gagged is a mosh-o-rama of noisy, discordant Midwestern metalcore, enhanced by the beautiful pipes of Kucsulain, who can deliver screaming convulsions and spoken word style passages without ever sounding whiny and strident. Finally, the inimitable Karyn Crisis has some competition. Slay, lady, slay.

First full length from these metal masters from Detroit, and they are steppin up to the bigtime with Trustkill. Holy metal batman! This record is so good. Who gives a shit if i am in love with this band, anyway. Any hardcore fan would love this. A perfect mix of speed, mosh, and metal, with damn good lyrics, and crazy as hell vocals from one of the nicest girls out there. Yes, I said girl, but don't even think of stereotyping this band. They are gonna be huge, and this record is gonna be the gas poured onto the fire to burn the building down. Just amazing.

This cd has been out for a month or so, but oh well, I have to tell everyone how great this band is. After I saw WOJ last week and after they kicked my ass with an amazing performance, I bought this cd. I am glad I did. Since you may not know anything about WOJ, here goes. Detroit metal from the ashes of Earthmover. Their talent is unexplainable. And if you haven't heard already, they have a female vocalist. Don't let that scare you off, she is awesome, and she sure can pound the metal. And their talent doesn't stop with metal. They get a little old school and punk at times, and they get emotional with the song "Angel"--an acoustic, no bass/drums song with great vocal harmonies. WOJ brings us great music, great vocals, great changes, great breakdowns, great lyrics--a great band. Again, I plea to you to check out a band I find to be unable to pass up. (Maybe Trustkill will put me on their street team for this plug. Ha ha).

Ahhh, yes, this is metal! Unforgiving and precise, with a plethora of alterations and stop/start timing. Short tracks with gusto! The sheer chaos of these vocals must be heard to be believed, the layering of screaming has never been so disturbing and aggressive! The production sounds barely murky in the guitar/bass department, but the heaviness is punishing and the drum sound rules - raw and tight. Excellent lyrics encompassing both personal/political ideas with direct and indirect delivery and some brutal lines that battle even the most infamous! They even totally make it happen on "Angel", an acoustic track with singing and vocal harmonies (no bass or drums). Definitely well rounded, and absolutely approved! Check this band out...

I went totally apeshit when I first heard their debut on Genet and I'm going totally apeshit over their latest on Trustkill. This band completely shreds! Female fronted vocals with intense metallic hardcore. It sounds completely like it's from the land of H8000 bands but it's from Michigan!! This band is very sincere and they play political hardcore with an old-school flavor but a new-school sound. It kind of reminds me of Catharsis, only female fronted. There's some really harsh heavier parts that just make my jaw drop. Awesome stuff.

Core Magazine

When Earthmover broke up we all lost a great hardcore band, but with three original Earthmover members forming Walls of Jericho the loss got eased. The first WOJ release "A Day And A Thousand Years" was already something special, mainly because this band has a female singer, called Candace, that can blow everybody away. The first actual album "The Bound Feed The Gagged" is another step forward. The band has become one living, breathing organism, and these four kids play their eleven songs with all their hearts. Totally unexpected among ten dazzling metalcore tracks is this ballad Angel, which proves Walls Of Jericho can play anything they like, however they like. The cd has been released by Trustkill Records in the States and Belgium’s own Genet gives us the vinyl version.
