The Dawn” From Bedlight For Blue Eyes

GORGEOUS POP ROCK: If you’ve been following Trustkill Records and its ascent into the hardcore and metalcore stratosphere over the past five years, you might be aware of the label’s rare forays into other genres. Bedlight For Blue Eyes is one of those infrequent, less heavy bands on the roster, and boy, did Trustkill unearth a fucking gem. The Dawn is gleaming, gorgeous pop rock not far removed from At The Drive-In and Thursday. Singer Christian Guerrero (who was born in Ecuador and speaks three languages) is a siren and the central figure on The Dawn, wailing and crooning with such passionate conviction hat you can’t help but be interested in what he’s saying and what moves him so pointedly. He often soars over his bandmates while remaining in key, rendering them the secondary (but certainly not inferior) element on The Dawn. Guerrero will move you with his delivery, and not by inches, either. His pipes have as much power as a wrecking ball, but Guerrero never has to scream, shout, or stomp his feet. He focuses on hitting his notes. The Dawn, namely on “Ephemeral Addictions” and “Midnight Symphony,” is power pop. While Guerrero is the star, the rest of the band are capable musicians who provide the perfect platform of riffs and rhythms on this stunning album.

What makes this band stand out from the multitude of bands mixing hardcore with melodic vocals is that lead singer Christian Andre Guerrero can actually sing. He trained as a singer, and it shows. It also helps that the rest of the band kicks ass as well, with both aggression and catchiness. They are not afraid to show their soft side either, with a slow tempo number as the second track of the album.

Every year an unknown band seems to make it in the scene, and make it big. Last year it was Daphne Loves Derby. This year, I am proud to introduce BEDlight For BlueEYES. The band (Christian, Justin, Derek, Itchy and James) have only been together for a year and a half, but have already gained a huge following, mainly due to lead singer Christian's insane vocal range. Now, after signing to Trustkill, the band have released their debut album The Dawn. Full of hardcore love songs, this album is a breath of fresh air for anyone who is looking for an alternative to the generic screamo that seems so popular right now. The album starts off with a bang. "Ephemeral Addictions" is a short song about heartbeak that introduces you to the beast that is Christian's voice. This man can hit notes you've probably not heard of. "Midnight Symphony" first shows you the sexual undertones in the bands lyrics, which everyone will like, as Christian sings "Makin' sweet love...". The band recorded a three song demo last year, and all three of these songs have been redone. "Leaving Berkley Heights" and "The Promise", both really just sound more polished, with nothing really added to the songs. Leaving Berkley Heights, my least favorite song on the record, has Christian using some falsetto screams that I found completely out of place. However, they make up for it on "The Promise", which is the song that introduced me to these guys. Christian voice sounds perfect, as do the guitars, bass, drums, and screams. Everything comes together to give you a musical treat in this song. The album closes out with "Ligeia", my favorite song by the guys and one of my favorite songs EVER. The song starts slow, with Christian just sort of scatting in the background, and then you get to the song. It's soft, then you hit the chorus and BOOM! Everything kicks in as Christian screams "She don't want this, she cries in the night, she's got that look in her eye, got that look in her eye, chokin' down the horror of her life...". This song again shows Christian experimenting with falsetto screams, however, they work perfectly this time. The song closes out with Christian singing over and over again "Giving up in the middle of the night, I will run to your side, giving up in the middle of the night, I will run to you...". At the end, the guys even added a little acoustic guitar, a welcome change from the demo, with Christian singing "Giving up in the middle of the night, I will run to your side, baby don't you give up the fight...". Beautiful and perfect. These guys have really come a long way for only being together two years, and it shows. However, as any band will in their debut album, they hit a snag here and there (Leaving Berkley Heights, The Nature Of The Ghost). However, this in no way takes away from what can only be described as "Musical Sex". Get this album NOW!!!

Every so often you come across a band that simply radiates with passion and devotion towards their lifestyle and the art of music. There are a few things more inspiring than a group of individuals in a creative team that truly believe and attest to the power of music as the divine and everlasting force that it is. So when a band like BEDlight for blueEYES appears on your radar with their distinct love of the art form and obvious life dedication to being a part of it, you can’t help but feel refreshed and relieved. Most bands in this scene are enthusiastic about their work, but some actually overwhelm you with their spirit and drive. The boys of BEDlight are just that type and The Dawn is their wonderful and explosive debut album. For first time listeners Christian Geurerro’s erupting, soaring, and melodic vocals will probably serve as an immediate point of interest. Geurerro has mastered his technique, crossing all bounds of range, offering ear pleasing vibrato, and able to turn on the hard rock edge with a straining growl at any time. He is doubtlessly one of the most talented singers ever to grace this genre. I would recommend you give a listen if only to marvel at his vocals. I know personally that Christian has slaved away practicing and developing his singing voice, and this disciplined effort has surely proved fruitful (I’m talking like American Idol abilities). The band also incorporates a couple instances of screaming, but only in the most necessary of locations and climaxes. Behind Christian lies a flurry of hard rock instrumentals. The guitars shout a mixture of metal solos, pinch harmonics, and hard hitting power chords and are every bit as impressive as the vocals. This is a band teeming with talent, every member is beyond proficient with their instrument and thus results some pretty engaging rock and roll songs. “Leaving Berkeley Heights,” is surely a standout track with a specifically captivating breakdown during the finish, which just about made me shiver. Throughout the record there are several moments like this where the vocals hit such an amazing peak on the summit of an instrumental buildup that it’s entirely enthralling, leaving the listener with the tingle of numinous sonic pleasure. “Dig on This,” is a huge ballad with a sweeping chorus and the verses of “Midnight Symphony,” reveal the rare yet attractive softer side of BEDlight. All in all almost every track is excellent. With only 10 songs, The Dawn does fall on the shorter side but still feels like a full serving size because of the densely packed content. Somehow, someway, BEDlight for blueEYES manage to meld soul, rock/metal, and pop into one glorious audio compound. If you’re looking for something a bit different but still extremely accessible or if you are just a fan of great rock, this band is ideal. Boatloads of raw talent and an inspiring wealth of passion towards their art is a most efficient fuel for the fire that burns in the heart of this dedicated band.

BEDlight For BlueEYES, perhaps you have heard of this band, and perhaps you haven’t. If you have not yet heard of these Jersey boys, then just wait and in a matter of time they will more than likely be on MTV, Fuse, and your local radio station. Some people might like it while for others this release will fall by the wayside. Whatever your response to this record may be, it certainly has an opportunity to be a huge hit among scenesters, hipsters, and the corporate rock radio world. This album was released by Trustkill Records eight months after the band signed to the label, and with a solid label home BEDlight will begin to spread their brand of passionate and driving rock to the world. Not only will they have the U.S. release but they plan to make a Spanish version of the album as well. This same desire to spread their music worldwide is just a part of the passion that fuels their music. The Dawn opens up with "Ephemeral Addictions" and this track, much like the rest of the album, is all high energy with excellent vocals. They range from a well-sung ballad to high-pitched squeals, as well as some great screams and the up-tempo rock shouts. The guitars throughout the disc provide some great solos that are reminiscent of 70’s classic rock and 80’s glam metal. The way each of these instruments accompany one another is akin to that of a well-oiled machine that runs the same day in and day out with a few minor tweaks here and there. The way this album was mixed allows you to hear each individual instrument, or you can hear the workings of said machine if we stick with the metaphor. Lyrically, this album is nothing new, but the quality of the vocals certainly sticks out and allows for more acceptance of a story that has been told a thousand times over. They also throw a few Spanish lines into a song or two, but it doesn’t really deter anything, but instead adds more to the diversity of this band. So when the Spanish version is released, does that mean those lines will be in English? Whatever the language, BEDlight For BlueEYES know that they have a voice in the modern rock scene, which isn’t an easy these days. As previously stated, BEDlight for BlueEYES is a name that you will begin to hear more and more as their popularity grows. TRL? Oven Fresh? Who really knows what is in store for this band, but one thing is for sure when Alternative Press said “Expect World Domination” and they probably aren’t too far off. With this release, The Dawn is definitely about to break.

New Jersey has brought upon yet another up-and-coming artist to delight our ears. BEDlight For BlueEYES are a blend of post-hardcore and indie that maintains its rock roots. The debut album, The Dawn, harvested by TrustKill Records is a simple example of why this band is about to take over the world. John Naclerio (My Chemical Romance, Senses Fail) produced the album and Phil Nicolo is behind the mixing, a spunky combination I must say. His name may be familiar from other artists such as Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Sting, and even the late John Lennon. The Dawn begins with “Ephemeral Addictions,” which is led by a wailing guitar, and a scream-to-melody fade in by lead singer Christian. Then comes the repetitious guitar riff, doubled by Derek Weber and Justin Ortiz, while bassist James Granuzzo and drummer Itzhak Bishburg provide a solid backbone for the tune. Guerrero’s vocals follow the music’s emotional breakdowns smoothly. The second track, “Midnight Symphony,” is a dark ballad with a rocking chorus. Guerrero’s voice reaches highs and lows to emphasize his pain on love and relationships. The following tracks are just as amazing as the previous ones. The forth track is named after their hometown, “Leaving Berkley Heights” which oozes more spine-tingling vocals and similar backing. Guerrero and his backup singers prove that they are on-par with the best in the genre. The breakdown of “Dig on This” brings out some Spanish influences, which is Guerrero’s heritage. The CD has a couple of screams here and there, especially on “The Promise.” However, it’s a good thing the screams are limited. It’s no surprise why this release has so much power behind it. BEDlight for BlueEYES are embarking on a new journey and The Dawn is the current destination. Check them out before they completely breakout, because their future sounds more promising then anyone I’ve heard in a while.

Not only does The Dawn feature some of the best vocals to date, but melodies that will keep you listening over and over. To come across a singer with vocals that have immense range, is one in a million. When listening to the song "Nature Of The Ghost" the combination of Christian's voice intertwined with the instruments is immaculate. The melody would make your 80 year old grandma want to get up and dance and sing along. The Dawn will shock you, awe you, and make you scream for more.
